Real Bride: Planning a Wedding in Reynisfjara Beach & Hótel Grímsborgir, Iceland
22 October, 2014
Kim and Chris from Georgia in the USA married on the Black Sand Beach of Reynisfjara, Iceland on the 22nd June, 2014.
Chris always wanted to go to Iceland. So, in March, for his milestone birthday in early June, I began to plan our adventure. After booking some hiking, camping, and snorkeling, I was showing Chris photos of how beautiful the country was. He then said to me, “Why don’t we get married there?”. Then the planning begun.
I contacted Miss Ann via her website, and had a video chat with her shortly thereafter. She was enthusiastic and very organized. She had several full day options of photos and ceremony/reception locations to choose from very quickly. She also was diligent in getting our required paperwork to the Icelandic authorities and set up our appointment to meet the local sheriff for our marriage license. Miss Ann took care of everything from booking the hotel, getting a local pastor to do the ceremony, and even decorated our reception venue. No detail went unnoticed.
There was quite a bit of paperwork to fill out and it had to be in to local authorities several weeks before our actual arrival in their country. Miss Ann was very helpful in this process and keeping me on the right timeline. Our marriage was recognized in the states with the handwritten marriage license we received the day of our wedding.
We flew from Atlanta, to JFK, to Reykjavik. We stayed in several places around the country until our final destination in Selfoss. We had rented a car at the beginning of our trip so the day of the wedding we took off caravan style to our destination, stopping at amazing locations for photo ops along the way. Renting a car with navigation was easy (especially since they drive on the right side of the road like we do at home). We even had a discount code from Miss Ann!
The Destination – Iceland
We arrived 5 days before the wedding. We married on our last full day in Iceland. The entire country is AMAZING! Just leaving the airport, countryside’s covered in moss and lavender flowers awaited us. Our wedding venue was breathtaking. All accommodations exceeded our expectations. The people of Iceland are very helpful, friendly, and all speak English. We took our 5 days to see caves, glaciers, craters, black beaches, ice caps, lava fields, and even got to camp in a glacier valley. Truly, I cannot say that I have ever had a more amazing time in my life! And to top it all off, I got to marry my love at the end.
It was only the two of us, along with the pastor, Miss Ann (planner & photographer extraordinaire) and Beth (comic relief and videographer) and several on looking tourists.
The best day EVER!
Miss Ann arranged for local hair and makeup artists to come to our little house where we were staying the morning of the big day. Miss Ann and Beth showed up and got right to taking photos, and keeping my groom sequestered upstairs. After a staged first look, we hit the road for a 14 hour day of driving and stopping at Miss Ann’s favorite photo op locations (side of the road, waterfalls, etc). We finally arrived at the black sand beach where we met the pastor, and said our vows in a shallow cave on the beautiful beach. Miss Ann and Beth had champagne and Icelandic pastries for us to toast with immediately following the marriage. We then, in full garb, went to a local gas station and had the infamous Icelandic hot dog with Ann and Beth. We had several stops on the way back to the hotel for even more photos (including some amazing cliffs) We arrived back at the Hotel Grimsborgir where Miss Ann had decorated a gazebo in the restaurant for our dinner for two. A few more pictures, we ate and laughed and talked about what a wonderful adventure we had just been on, then it was off to bed. Since the sun didn’t go down, we didn’t realize we had dinner around 10pm!
Advice for Other Couples Considering Iceland as a Wedding Destination
If anyone is going to get married in Iceland, or any destination for that matter, my advice is to leave the details to a professional like Iceland Wedding Planner and Photos by Miss Ann. There was really no pre-wedding stress, just full on excitement. I have even told Ann she better be available for our 5 year anniversary trip!
