2014 Destination Wedding Trend #10 – Spirit Balloons
Spirit balloons, spirit lanterns, sky lanterns, Kongming, Khom Loi . . . . whatever you call them, these lovely floating lights originated hundreds of years ago in Chinese festivals, but have become popular more recently at weddings, particularly in Thailand. And yes, yes, I know we covered ‘Lanterns & Lights‘ earlier in the list, but given their popularity and considering their ‘endangered’ status, I thought that they deserved their own mention. The pictures you see below were shot as far and wide as Laos, the Dominican Republic, the Seychelles, Mexico, Peru and even Lapland. They’ve attracted the wrong kind of attention in some countries however, where they’ve actually been banned as a fire hazard. Their use is now illegal in parts of China, Germany, Austria, Spain, Vietnam and several countries in South America, while a permit is required in parts of the UK and the US. Personally, I love them and they’re one of my favorite parts of a wedding. They also create the most amazing pictures, as you’re about to see. Who knows how much longer they’ll be in use, so for now, let’s enjoy the light show!
