A Wedding Photographer’s Wedding in Port Douglas, Australia
It’s always an enormous compliment – not to mention a glowing endorsement – for a photographer to be asked to shoot another wedding photographer’s big day. Such was the case when Hilary Cam was invited to capture the recent wedding of Gavin Cato and his lovely bride, Michelle. Similarly, when a wedding photographer plans a destination wedding, you know that the location is going to be something really special.
Gavin and Michelle chose Port Douglas, a small town located in far north Queensland, 1,700 kilometres from the nearest capital city in Australia. This secluded, tropical oasis is famous for its proximity to two World Heritage sites; the Great Barrier Reef, one of the ‘Seven Natural Wonders of the World’ and a spectacular underwater botanical garden housing a brilliant display of sea life in the world’s largest reef system; and the breathtaking Daintree Rainforest, the oldest rainforest in the world and home to the highest number of rare or threatened species on the planet.
Gavin and Michelle married in true, laid back Port Douglas style, with an intimate outdoor ceremony beneath the trees before kicking back to celebrate with family and friends in the luxurious surrounds of Port Douglas Sea Temple Resort and Spa.
From the Photographer: This wedding was a collaboration with bride and groom. We scouted locations together, the ceremony was arranged according to best light and Gavin even directed a couple of location shots himself. Together we happened across some truly perfect spots. This is the only wedding where the groom took a time-out and began to take a couple of photographs of his own bride. Also the first wedding where the Groom has pop-quizzed me on what shutter-speed, ISO, focal length and f-stop was being used.. and not just to make small talk. That’s a true photographer for you – can’t even take a break on your own wedding!
