Beautiful Icehotel Wedding in Sweden by Annevi Petersson

I never pass up an opportunity to feature an Icehotel wedding on the BWB blog.  After all, BWB wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for my own Icehotel wedding five years ago.  Although, it was actually quite funny reading the bride’s recollection of her wedding day as it was almost identical to my own in lots of ways.  Kylie and Simon are also Australian, and just like us, wanted an intimate wedding overseas so that they could relax and really enjoy the day.  We also had just 8 guests, including my Dad who was there to walk me down the aisle – just like Kylie and Simon!  Hmmm . . . I’m beginning to think that we should meet!  Because the Icehotel is so remote – 200km north of the Arctic Circle to be precise – you have a bit of a sense that only a handful of people go there, let alone travel all that way to get married.  That’s not at all true of course, the Icehotel is a renowned tourist destination, and a very popular wedding location as well.  So as dumb as it sounds, it always comes as a bit of a surprise when I’m reminded that plenty of other people get married at “our place”!  I suppose we all fall in love with our wedding destinations though.  We choose them for their beauty or their significance, but by the time we leave as husband and wife, they mean so much more to us.  So it’s actually quite nice to know that other people have the same love affair with the Icehotel that we do.  Here’s Kylie and Simon’s amazing wedding day, captured beautifully by Annevi Petersson.

From the Bride: The venue and location were very special to us. We knew we wanted to get married overseas and we wanted to have a small wedding so we could relax and enjoy the day. In 2009 we had a great time visiting friends and travelling through northern Sweden and we had always wanted to go back in winter to visit the Icehotel. We thought the Icehotel was the ultimate setting for a winter wedding! We’re having a wedding reception back in Sydney so we can celebrate with family and friends who weren’t at the wedding. We’re having modern Scandinavian canapés and desserts and we’ll have a slideshow of photos of the wedding so our guests can experience a bit of Sweden!  People travelled a long way to come to our wedding, with the bride’s father, the groom’s brother and sister in law and two friends travelling from Sydney, Australia and three friends travelling from Luleå in northern Sweden. We are so lucky that our family and friends were able to join us. We had 8 guests so it was a very small wedding. For our wedding reception we had a relaxed dinner at the Icehotel Restaurant and because we had a small number of guests we didn’t have to worry about having a seating chart.  It was special that my father was able to be at the wedding to walk me down the aisle.  It was also special that Simon’s brother read the poem “I Like You” by Sandol Stoddard Warburg and his sister in law was our videographer for the day.  The dinner at the Icehotel was amazing. We had our own private room and it was a lovely surprise to have an ice sculpture on the table!
